ESPN Interview with Bill Self, Jayhawks Are Not a Good Practice Team Yet

Is that where you feel your team is right now?? Have you heard that term before? From ESPN yesterday, Bill Self talking to Dana Jacobson about Kansas Jayhawks basketball, he described his team as "not a a good practice team yet." I would venture that late October / early November, most coaches would characterize their teams the same way. Here is the full interview if you want to see it:

I've often read from teaching, coaching, and even parenting articles that you should always start strict at the beginning of the season, and slowly ease up later when the situation warrants it. The idea being that it is much easier to ease up later than to start easy and go hard later.

On the other hand, after being away for so long, most players by nature aren't in the right mental state at the beginning of the season and therefore maybe they need more time to get into the right state of mind. Accordingly, you would then start the season with practices slightly easier, and gradually start tightening the screws as the season really gets started.

What do y'all think about it?? Or are you the kind of coach that only has one mode: all out all the time.

Kansas' Buford receives diversion for DUI

A second Kansas basketball player has been given a chance to wipe his record clean of drunken-driving charges. The Lawrence prosecutor's office says 21-year-old Chase Buford must pay $802 in fees. He is not allowed to consume alcohol or drugs for one year and must undergo substance abuse treatment. The junior guard from San Antonio was pulled over early on July 11 in Lawrence. Authorities say he refused to submit to a breath test.

Sometimes Being Undefeated Is Meaningless

Last week the Kansas Jayhawks sat in the poll at 5-0 and ranked. Their 5-0 ranking looked nice and pretty until you took a look at whom they actually played on the field.

Week 1: Northern Colorado (2-5)
Week 2: @UTEP (2-4)
Week 3: Duke (3-3)
Week 4: Southern Miss (4-3)
Week 5: Iowa State (4-3)

Not all 5-0 records are as good as 4-1 records and this was the case for Kansas, yet the Coaches still decided to rank them ahead of Oregon, amongst others, whose lone loss was at Boise St. and whom had already beaten Utah (5-1) and Cal (4-2).

This weekend Kansas lost to a Colorado team that was 1-4 with losses against both Toledo and Colorado State. Kansas might be a good football team, they might win some meaningful Big 12 games and perhaps they will represent the Big 12 North, but last week they should not have been ranked #15 and this week they should not be ranked period (they are in both polls). They have done nothing to warrant any voter consideration and perhaps that is the biggest issue with the polls, sometimes voters just look at records and don't do any examination into whether being 5-0 actually means something.
